In SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) model, screening is an extremely important step. Simply saying, health care workers will ask clients some questions to determine the level of their alcohol / drug use. After determining this level, we will know what type of interventions should be done to ensure the suitability and efficiency for each client.
In fact, an intensive treatment applies only to 5% clients at serious use level. For the majority with low use level, basic education, providing information or brief interventions are effective enough to solve the problem. In other words, good screening will help bring about "proper and sufficient" interventions.
At present, screening for patients with alcohol and drug abuse in Viet Nam is underestimated, leading to inefficient performance of services. Not only does it overload the clinic with unrealistic time and money spent by patients, but it also makes the country's health care system bear unreasonable costs.
In the last post (see here), we have introduced you to the screening tools including DAST (for drug use) AUDIT (for alcohol use). In this post, we will provide a card instructing how to read the results of these questionnaires for the healthcare providers who conducted screening with patients.
We thank SAMHSA as well as the University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC) for agreeing to allow us to translate and introduce this card.
