Workshop on Autism Spectrum Disorder and MHealth in SUD, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Management

On April 11, 2018, VHATTC - University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City was pleased to welcome two experts from Arizona State University (ASU), USA - Dr. Ronald O'Donnell and Dr. Ethan Bindelglas. Besides meetings with UMP leaders, two experts delivered 2 lectures for Public Health students and clinical staffs from Methadone clinics with interesting and useful topics.

On his second visit to UMP, Dr. O'Donnell brought updates on the idea of using web-based technologies, app-based software and mobile platforms to serve and support the prevention and management of substance use disorders and HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases. The convenience and efficiency of smartphone apps, browsers, software come in two ways. First, technology assists patients, helps them self-monitor their health, and their risk behaviors, making them feel they have autonomy over their life. Second, technology is an efficient tool supporting healthcare staff, helping them improve their performance while saving time and enhancing the professionalism of their services.

Technology will be the future of the world, influencing many industries and services. Healthcare is not an exception. The prospect when people wear biometric sensors to measure their body's indexes will be no longer a rare phenomenon. This is an indispensable trend and will bring positive benefits if we are well aware of this trend and constantly exploring new technologies.

Presentation by Dr. Ethan Bindelglas focuses on the most basic knowledge about autism spectrum disorders (ASD), symptom, causes and most importantly the current treatment regimens for this disorder. According to Dr. Bindelglas, There is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, and there's currently nomedication to treat it. The only evidence-based intervention for this disorder is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Other therapies or methods are also available to treat co-occurring diseases as well as problems in communication and social interaction for patients.
